Long Drive at no.3

Top-5 Songs of 2012 - By Joginder Tuteja

Long Drive - Khiladi 786 [Music: Himesh Reshammiya]

Written by Sameer, 'Long Drive' was a fun-n-celebration number about making merry with the loved one. Mika Singh came behind the mike for this hip-hop number which was instantly catchy as well. While the beginning (with a harmonium) caught your attention, one could also sense a quintessential Himesh stamp to the song as it warmed up and brought in some added beats. In fact this was one song which could well have had Himesh himself rendering it and no one would have minded that.

Himesh to visit Ajmer

Himesh To Visit Ajmer Shariff To Offer Gratitude On 'Khiladi 786' Success

With an eventful 2012 behind him, Himesh Reshammiya is on cloud nine. While his major comeback as a composer has paid dividends in a big way, he has also managed to taste blood as a producer. With Khiladi 786 continuing to find its audience even in it's second week, the composer/singer/producer/actor/story writer has now decided to visit Ajmer Shariff to offer gratitude on Khiladi 786 success.
"Yes, Himesh is finalising plans for his visit", informs his close associate, "He is carefully planning his trip though. Last time when we went there to take blessings for his debut film as an actor, Aap Kaa Surroor, he wore a burkha, as a result of which a huge controversy happened. He doesn't intend any such thing to happen now."

With musical successes like Bodyguard (2011), Bol Bachchan, OMG Oh My God!, Son of Sardaar and now Khiladi 786 behind him, he has all the more reasons to be ecstatic.

Says Himesh, "I am very happy that my fifth film in a row has become a hit. There is no way I can miss visiting Ajmer Shariff soon and offer gratitude. 2012 has ended on a very positive note with 25 hit songs in a row and 5 films touching gold. It's a great feeling."

With the Akshay Kumar starrer done a business of 65 crores already just from Indian theatrical and still doing well due to positive word of mouth, there is added moolah coming in from the satellite rights (30 crores), music (6 crores), overseas plus video rights.

"All of this is good but this also gives me a pressure of delivering more hits next year. I have to see to it that I give 50 hit songs next year, at least two hit films as a producer and grow as a dependable actor", promises Himesh before signing off.

Singer Sreeram thanks Himesh for keeping jis promise

Since Sreeram won Indian Idol 5, nothing much happened for him in the playback singing scene. Anu Malik kept on saying that 'Sreeram, tum kamaal ke singer ho' but thats about it n Salim Suleman also recorded a Talugu song with him along with Shreya and the clip was shown on Indian Idol 5 but god knows what happened to it. He sung a couple of Bollywood songs in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan but they failed to make the desired impact.

But its thanks to Himesh who kept his promise n gave Sreeram a swolid song that brought him into the limelight n make everyone sit up n notice his voice in a big way.

Himesh Reshammiya has bought the remake rights of hit Punjabi film Jatt and Juliet. The film starring Punjabi actors Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa did quite well in Delhi, Punjab as well as overseas. Buzz is that Himesh is now looking to cast an A-list actor as a sardar in the film’s Bollywood remake.

Our source says, “Himesh has decided not to act in the film. We are looking for an actor to play the lead.” The source adds, “The director of the Punjabi film, Anurag Singh (of Dil Bole Hadippa fame) might also be roped in to helm this project.” Himesh apparently has already composed six music tracks for the remake.

Himesh to score for Shah Rukh Khan?

Himesh to score for Shah Rukh Khan?

Looks like Himesh Reshammiya will soon be collaborating with Shah Rukh Khan. Thanks to Rohit Shetty, who, it is learnt, is strongly recommending the composer-singer for Chennai Express, his next with the superstar. The action-comedy-romance is scheduled to start this October.

Interestingly, it was Ajay Devgn who suggested Himesh to Rohit for their upcoming comedy. Reportedly, another composer duo was to create the soundtrack for the movie, when Ajay, who had finalised Himesh to compose the music for his next, Son Of Sardaar (SOS), suggested that Rohit hear a couple of tracks he had come up with. Initially Ajay too was roping in another composer duo for SOS, till he heard a couple of tunes created by Himesh. Going by these developments, seems no doubt the ace composer is back in a big way.

Sanjay Dutt’s Saamy remake is finally confirmed

Sanjay Dutt’s Saamy remake is finally confirmed!

News of Sanjay Dutt’s untitled action drama, a remake of the Tamil hit Saamy (2003), has been making headlines for some time now. In fact, a few months ago, the actor apparently pulled out of the project as there were some issues regarding the film’s rights. As a result, he had also returned the signing amount of  Rs. 2 crore to the makers. Since then, the film seems to have been put on the backburner.

But now, Sanjay is set to play the corrupt-cop-turns-good-cop act in the film.

“I don’t know where such talk (of the film not happening) comes from. I’ve already had detailed discussions with producer TP Aggarwal in Mumbai,” says Tamil director KS Ravikumar, who will make his Bollywood debut with this film.

Besides the Agneepath actor, the makers have roped in dialogue-writer duo Sajid-Farhad of the Golmaal series fame, as well as music composer Himesh Reshammiya. “In a couple of days, Sajid and Farhad are coming to Chennai to discuss the work,” says Ravikumar, adding, “They have already finished writing the first half’s dialogue.” Apparently, Himesh too has already composed a few songs.

Ask Ravikumar about how close the story of the remake will be to the Vikram-starrer and he says: “We have reworked the entire script to put it in a modern setting. After all, Saamy came out almost 10 years ago. The film shouldn’t look dated.”

Although rumours suggest that the movie is currently titled Thanedaar Returns, Ravikumar denies any such development. “There are three to four options, but it hasn’t been titled yet.” As of now, if everything goes as per plan, the film is expected to go on the floors around mid-June this year. And is Amitabh Bachchan also in talks for a part? “Yes, we are talking to Mr Bachchan, but his casting is yet to be confirmed,” clarifies Ravikumar, who in the past has directed Kamal Haasan’s Dasavathaaram (2008) and will helm Rajinikanth’s Rana, when it returns to the floors.

The rumour mills:

December 24, 2011: Dutt is on a three-month training program to prepare himself for the role of a super cop for the Saamy remake
December 26, 2011: The film is titled Thanedaar Returns and music composer Anirudh of Kolaveri di fame is likely to work on it
January 18, 2012: The Saamy remake falls through, after Dutt pulls out due to some rights issues; returns signing amount of  Rs. 2 cr
February 2, 2012: Director KS Ravikumar starts work on completely new story for a film that’s not based on Saamy
February 11, 2012: Makers work on an “original subject” and not a remake of one of Ravikumar’s Tamil hits

Himesh and Deols together again

Himesh and Deols together again

Himesh Reshammiya had been rather close to the Deols till June 2007. That's when his acting debut flick Aap Ka Suroor clashed with Dharmendra, Sunny, Bobby starrer Apne at the box office.

Himesh, who had at the time asked the Deols to push the release of their film, had been a bit upset at their polite refusal. But the composersinger-actor is not one to hold grudges for long. Mirror has learnt that Himesh has been signed on to create the music for the Deols' upcoming sequel to 2011 hit Yamla Pagla Deewana.

A source close to the project informed Mirror, "Himesh had asked the Deols to push back the release date of Apne from June 29. He was making his acting debut with Aap Ka Suroor and it was also his mother's birthday. Himesh wanted to get a clear window of a few weeks for his film to run."

"However, the Deols had politely refused to comply. It was a big film for them. Himesh, who had even composed the music for Apne had been a bit upset. However, now Himesh has decided to let bygones be. The Deols offered him this project and Himesh readily accepted it," the source added.
Himesh Reshammiya was unavailable for comment.

Himesh replaces Sajid-Wajid in Son Of Sardar

Himesh replaces Sajid-Wajid in Son Of Sardar

Sajid-Wajid, who had composed one song for Ajay Devgn’s home production, Son Of Sardar , will no longer be scoring the music for the film. Himesh Reshammiya has taken over as the composer and has started working on the project. Sameer, who is writing the lyrics for the film, said that the producers will be retaining the song composed by the duo. “Irshad Kamil had written the lyrics for that number and I have been signed on now,” said the lyricist, adding that he is not aware of the reason of the duo’s exit.

When contacted, composer Wajid said that there was no animosity between him and the producer of the film, Ajay Devgn. “It was a question of schedules. The shooting of Son Of Sardar happened earlier than we thought, and hence we couldn’t fit it into our schedule. We were committed to Dabangg 2, Rowdy Rathore, Teri Meri Kahaani etc . The one song that we have composed is brilliant,” said the composer.

Lyricist Shabbir Ahmed

Lyricist Shabbir Ahmed has his plate full with 15 movies

With the recent success of his composition ‘Teri Meri’ from ‘Bodyguard’, lyricist Shabbir Ahmed has received wide acclaim and a new found recognition for his work. The lyricist now has more than 15 upcoming films in his kitty including six with his favourite Himesh Reshammiya.

Speaking about the success of ‘Teri Meri’, Ahmed said, “The entire idea of this song was conceived by Salman Khan. We worked the whole night to write this song and find a right tune. It was because of this unique combination of the composer Himesh and actor Salman that such a universally hit song could develop. I am glad I got a chance to work on ‘Teri Meri’ and it has received so much acclaim today.”

The lyricist has his plate full for 2012 and is penning songs for more than six films with Himesh Reshammiya like ‘Dangerous Ishq’, ‘Khiladi 786’, ‘Shortcut Romeo’ and more. Ahmed added, “It has always been a very unique experience working with a composer like Himesh. He is very passionate about his work which is very addictive. He has a lot of sense about lyrics and is sometimes very adamant on a particular word and style and doesn’t give in till it is incorporated. I have been working with Himesh from past 2-3 years and have written around 200-300 songs for him till now.”

No place for ego

New composer readily accepts Himesh Reshammiya's suggestion to tweak a song in his next film

We often hear about cut-throat competition and insecurity in the film industry. So it's like a breath of fresh air to learn about new composer Shyam Balkhar agreeing to Himesh Reshammiya's suggestion of changing the hookline of a song from his forthcoming movie, Haule Haule Ho Jaayega Pyaar.

When Balkhar composed the track Abhi hai kuchh naye naye se gham, he felt Raahat Fateh Ali Khan would best render it. Since he's a relative newcomer, the film's creative producer, Rakesh Upadhyay, who's also best friends with Himesh, spoke to the ace singer-composer to help coordinate with the Pakistan-based artiste.

"Himesh and Rakesh share a  thick friendship. So Himesh personally co-ordinated with Raahat saab to get the song recorded in Lahore," reveals a source associated with the movie.

Later, when Shyam shared the song with the experienced senior through Rakesh, Himesh not only praised it, but also suggested they change the hookline to an aalaap so it registers better.

Confirming this, Upadhyay said, "Shyam's composition of Abhi hain kuchh naye naye se gham is very touching. But when he changed the hookline to an aalaap, following Himesh's suggestion, he was thrilled with the impact of the song. He thanked Himesh for not only helping him get Raahat to record the song but also for his input."

Himesh To Start

Last week, we mentioned that apart from Khiladi 786, Himesh Reshammiya would make two more movies very soon. One of them is the sequel to Aap Ka Surroor.

This film, too, will be directed by Ashish Mohan (also the director of Khiladi 786). Though Aap Ka Surroor was a solo-hero project, the sequel will be a multi-starrer.

Aditi Singh Sharma on Himesh

Himesh ji I have a lot of respect for, it was really cool to have worked with him. I love his melodies. ‘Mango’ was crazy and he just let me do my own thing, but on ‘Madhushala’, it was awesome to have gotten a chance to try something different. I worked in the studio with Himesh ji’s dad, very hard on the song and I’m very grateful because Himesh ji and I have both tried 2 different styles in the song and I’m guessing it’s worked!

Himesh gears up for some action

Himesh Reshammiya gears up for some action

Himesh Reshammiya hopes to lose weight in the next couple of months. And he's set a rather ambitious target too. He wants to be lighter by 10 kilos by February. All this, for a new action film and an upcoming reality show. So, while you can expect to see Himesh sporting a new look, rest assured that the cap will stay. He tells CS why:

Lucky charm

The cap has proved very lucky for me. There was a phase when I took it off, and then all my projects bombed. I'm going to always wear it now, in my films and TV shows too. It feels good to know that I've finally got a film that's clicked with the audience. Otherwise, you know that I've been panned for my work in the past.

Scoring a ton

I've received my share of criticism for my voice and films. But of late, I'm being left alone. That could be because by now I have a repertoire that speaks for me. I've finished a hundred films. I must say that Salman (Khan) bhai has been very lucky for me. I owe my career to him. My first film was with him and my 101st project, Bodyguard, was again with him. And his involvement with the latter was tremendous. Salman bhai can smell a chartbuster very easily.

Master your game

I might be called the Jack of all trades, but I know what my strength is. I know that I'm best at composing. It was only after I'd done well in that area that I shifted the gear to singing and then after getting a few nods, moved to acting. But I wouldn't recommend too many youngsters to aim to be that versatile. It's best to specialise in one area. Even if it's singing, it makes sense to have a forte. I don't advocate versatility too much.

I'm a batsman in form

I'm a batsman in form

You have to hand it to Himesh Reshammiya. The music-composer-turned-singer-turned-actor has a never-say-attitude, when it comes to work.

Despite being criticised, often by audience and critics, Himesh continues to churn out songs and act in films. On the small screen, he will be seen hosting a reality music show Sur Kshetra where he will be mentoring aspiring singers from India. Himesh spoke to BT about controversies, future projects and silencing critics with his work...

What made you say yes to the show?

It's because of the scale and way the show has been designed. Here we're trying to find a voice that's unconventional. There are so many singers who're doing well today. It's not so difficult to get a break, but to make an identity for yourself is very difficult.

Most reality shows end up becoming a platform for judges to argue between themselves...
At least with my reality shows, I can say that there has not been unnecessary fighting. If at all, there has been a difference of opinion, it has been for the sake of the contestant.

You're doing a reality show, acting in a Hollywood film, cutting an international album and acting in Hindi films. Doesn't quality suffer when you take on too much?
I've always been doing a lot of work. Only this last one-and-a-half years, I took a break to go to the next level. It was important to creatively reload myself. I've created a bank of 500 songs. I'm ready creatively. Execution doesn't take much time if you're creatively sure. I think I can handle a lot of work. When a batsman is in form, he scores the maximum runs.

You have often been criticised for your acting as well as your singing. Do you get affected?
Not at all. If anyone has criticised me, they have their point of view. It's important that I win them with my work. I have survived five films, two have done well. I'm coming up with 3-4 films next year. I'm growing as an actor. Even Damadamm has recovered its costs. I have a 40 per cent success ratio. I will try and better my perfomance with each film. I have to shoot for an action film next so I'm working out to lose the extra weight I have put on. I will try and look better as well as perform better.

ACE MUSIC DIRECTOR VIPIN RESHAMMIYA ON SON HIMESH, HIS OWN ILLUSTRIOUS MUSIC JOURNEY AND FINER NOTES OF LIFE

H e may be introduced today as the father of singer turned actor Himesh Reshammiya, but that in no way belies the creatively rich life this ace musician has lived. Aside of being one of the few who had the privilege to work with music legends like Shankar- Jaikishan, Lakshmikant- Pyarelal and RD Burman, Vipins biggest contribution to cinema has been his music. He was the first music director to introduce electronic music instruments to the industry. Today, the proud father of an equally accomplished son, Vipin is all words but only for his son. Vipin who will, after a long time, independently compose for his sons upcoming film says, " Himesh has requested me to compose music for his upcoming movie. He wants to enjoy my decided for which movie I will be scoring. I hope people will soon be able to see father and son work together." Coax him a little more on his own journey and the ace musician begins in a storytelling mode, " My musical life started with my sister.

I learnt music from my Guru Pandit Baburao Gokhle. At the age of fourteen I received a gold medal from Pandit Omkarnath Thakur.

Later, Shankar- Jaikishen noticed me playing harmonium at a function.

They were so impressed with it that I was nicknamed the harmonium wizard. I got the best musician award at a very early age too. But it was because of Lataji, who first took note of my talent and supported me, that I got started as a musician in the industry." The going wasn't easy for Vipin.

" My initial days were filled with struggle. I started getting work but

gradually and today have close to three thousand songs to my credit." However today, its the role of a proud father that Vipin enjoys the most. " I have a wonderful child who is talented and good at heart.

I have worked really hard to get success so I value it and live with a sense of pride when I see my son achieve the same." And while Vipin doesn't compose on a regular basis, what keeps him busy these days is imparting that knowledge to the future greats. " I teach music. I do not want to retire now. I want to keep on working," says the veteran who believes that for achieving something one needs to have " a dream you believe in." Recalling his years in the industry, Vipin says, " This industry has given me a lot of love and respect.

I have had huge commercial successes and have been awarded with the Dada Saheb Phalke Award and many others for my work. I am happy that I was, and am, a part of it." Vipin continues, " I am the proudest father on earth. Himesh has given me all the happiness and earned the success, which every father wants for his child. He was only six years old when he started learning music. I remember once when I came back home from recording, I saw Himesh crying loudly. I played a song of Lataji and he suddenly stopped crying.

From that time I knew that my son had a sharp ear for music and I started teaching him the finer nuances. And today, he is a wonderful music composer and actor. I like his work very much. His last movie 'Damadamm'was a huge success. What more can I ask for?" Yet there are times when the musician in Vipin surfaces.

" Himesh composes on his own, but there are times when he comes to me for suggestions and I '

Salman Khan is my driving force

Mumbai: Composer-singer-actor Himesh Reshammiya credits actor Salman Khan, a godfather to many newcomers, for his success in the Hindi film industry.

"For me it`s always been god, dad and Salman Khan. He (Salman) has been a driving force for me. I just want to thank him for his support. Thank you Salman bhai," said 38-year-old Himesh, whose music in the actor`s "Bodyguard" was well-received by the audiences.

Himesh, who reportedly had a spat with Salman sometime back, minced no words while thanking the actor and his family for helping him at every stage of his decade-long career either a music director, singer or even as an actor.

"After this break of one-and-a-half years and with love and good wishes of Salman bhai, my first film "Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya" was possible because of the Khan family and now my 101st film "Bodyguard" also is getting me awards. It`s all because of their love. In some way or the other Salman bhai has been the reason for my success," said Himesh.

After his success as a composer-singer, Himesh took up acting in films like "Aap Ka Suroor", "Karzzzz", "Kajraare" and "Damadamm". He is looking forward to more acting and music assignments.

"Now after this break I am all set to give music, and I will give music for a lot of films. I will produce quite a few films too and will also start with my acting spree. I have four films in hand.

"I`m creatively reloaded. I`m ready with eight to nine scripts, which I have compiled for production houses. As far as the music front is concerned, when I had come here at the age of 16, I came with 300 songs and today I am ready with 500 songs and have signed 250 artists for"it," he added.

Himesh is also set for some international projects, both, as a composer and as an actor.

"An international album in collaboration with Lil Wayne and Edward Maya is also ready. I have formulated 15 songs for it and the album is called `The Edge`. DJ Edward Maya is doing my song and Roman White, who directs Justin Bieber`s videos is directing our album too. I am also doing an international film `A * Is Killed`," said Himesh.

For 2012, his hands are full with films like "Namastey London 2", "Dangerous Ishq", "Khiladi 786", "Shortcut Romeo" and "A New Love Ishtory".

Swapna planning her next film with Himesh

Swapna planning her next film with Himesh Reshammiya!

She made headlines when Damadamm, her debut film as a director, was released on the same day as Ra.One.

However, Swapna Waghmare Joshi says, "We knew Ra.Onewas a very big film, but felt there was also place for another short and sweet film during Diwali. Fortunately, it worked."

Asked about the experience of working with Himesh Reshammiya, she says, "While many warned me about Himesh being short-tempere, he never lost his cool on the sets. I have known him since he was 19 and he is a very chilled out guy. He has improved tremendously as an actor and even my next film will star him. And I am sure both of us will do even better then! In fact, initially, I was reluctant about making a film, as it would mean moving out of my comfort zone ("a safe position now in television after a 22 year struggle"). But friends said I must take up new challenges and I talked to Himesh about having a workshop, as the movie was very different from what he had done before."

Having directed both TV serials and now a movie, she has an interesting take, "When I do serials, it's like everything has to be told thrice, as people do a lot of other work simultaneously while watching TV. Major difference between the two lies in the technique. Nowadays, though, television serials don't go over the top to grab attention. I will continue to do both serials and movies."

Damadamm on Colors

Now you can watch the world television premiere of Damadamm on 18th December at 5.30 pm on Colors along with popcorn or any other food and drinks of your choice. Considering that Himesh won rave reviews, most critics gave it a thumbs up and whosoever saw the film in theaters gave positive feedback reports, this is indeed a very good move by the makers to showcase the film on small screen as that allows for a lot of audience reach and so it would let them witness for themselves that Damadamm was a decent watch and had overall quality content as a total package. Plus, the revenue earned from sale of TV satellite rights would only add to the final BO tally and go in favor of the makers.

Himesh Reshammiya is back as a judge

Music composer-turned-actor Himmesh Reshammiya is back on television to judge a music-based reality show at a whopping price tag.

The music-composer is involved in everything right from scripting of the promo, styling to its designing. Adds a source, "Himesh is very particular about his looks on the show. He felt he looked a little plump on screen during the shooting of the promos of the show hence is undergoing rigorous workout session to attain the desirable physique." Meanwhile, talks are on with ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali to co-judge this show.

Himesh wins award

When Himesh created HISTORY by being da first ever and only music director to win best male playback singer 2006 Filmfare award, he came on stage with all guns blazing and all cylinders firing, with an ANGRY YOUNG MAN look n attitude, coz finally he got his long deserved due. There was a JOSH and JUNOON in his TONE and he didn't forget to take his daddy on stage to introduce da great man to da entire film industry and seek blessings from him. After so many years, Himesh has again won 2 awards, and even this time round he took his daddy on stage but there was a HUGE DIFFERENCE this time around. Since his 1st award, Himesh has come a long way n created history n records that can only be broken by himself in future, n it was his 101st film. So there was COMPOSURE n THEHRAV in his speech as if SAARA JAHAAN MUQAMAL KAR LIYA HO whereas in 2005 unhe woh SAB KUCH PAANA THA. Great spirit by PRITAM DA who clapped sportingly, and also by ATUL who acknowledged Pritam for his contribution in Bodyguard music, this is a sign of a GREAT HUMAN BEING with GOOD MORAL VALUES.

Whenever Vipinji enters and exits da stage, he folds his hands to say Namaste / Namashkaar, as if to show and express his gratitude to film industry for being kind and showering their blessings to his son and to audience for accepting / supporting his son and turning him into a rwakstar with all duaan, prayers n best wishes.

Deepika wants to work with Himesh

Deepika wants to work with Himesh

Deepika Padukone shared a candid conversation with trade analyst Komal Nahta on the show ETC Bollywood Business.where she said she is ready to do a film with singer-actor-filmmaker Himesh Reshamiya.

Talking about her professional career, Deepika said, “I got my first film offer two years before Om Shanti Om. I had decided, I would never do two things; firstly work in a music video and secondly participate for Miss. India. However, I accepted Himesh Reshamiya’s ‘Naam hai tera tera” album, as Himesh’s songs were a rage at that time. Farah Khan noticed me in that video and casted me for Om Shanti Om.

"Farah gave me a perfect launch in Bollywood. After doing a movie like Om Shanti Om…I use to wonder ‘iske baad main kya karugi’…”

Deepika is not one to forget favors, it seems.

“If I get an offer to do a film opposite Himesh Reshamiya, I would accept it.”said Deepika.

Clarifying her catfight rumors over a pink dress with Chitrangada, Deepika said, “I don’t think we had such movie budget constrains that me and Chitrangada had to fight over a dress. In fact, there was no pink dress in the movie. As a matter of fact, when I reached London for my shoot, Chitrangada had already done with her scenes and left. Even our looks in the movie is completely different.

"Even professionally we do different kind of movies…our spaces are different. Such rumors create awkwardness with the person."

Expressing her point of view to such media behaviour, Deepika said, “There is no need to react to such rumors. People read and forget about what is written in the media. My movies..my work should speak for me.”

Himesh Reshammiya continues to mix acting & music with world tours

There are quite a few announcements that are all set to be made in the 'Damadamm' success party that Himesh Reshammiya would be hosting later this month. While Salman Khan would be a special guest at the event with quite a few other top celebrities joining as well, Himesh is making sure that he makes best use of this platform.

I will continue to act

Though your first movie Aap Kaa Surroor was a hit, the last three films did not do well at the box-office. What are your expectations with Damadamm!?

I am very confident that Damadamm! will do very good business and it will get me back in the same race where I was afterAap Kaa Surroor. Radio was made only for a niche audience, where I got a lot of critical acclaim for my performance but the film could not do well at the box-office. Later, I had to suffer due to the fallout with Bhushan Kumar for Kajraare. I am quite confident that Damadamm! will give me a mileage as an actor. Even though it's releasing with RA.One, is huge competition and is obviously going to do well.

You recently got the rights of Damadamm! Why is that?

There was huge pressure when it came to the release of Kajraare. It was a good product but could not get its due. I had to be careful as far as the release strategy was concerned. Studio 18 owed me a lot of money and that's how the deal between the two of us got struck. The music and video distribution rights have been given to my company HR Musik. There is no bitterness with Studio 18.

There is a dance step in the promos in which you are mocking yourself. Please comment.

It's a fun film which will make you smile. I am not as serious in real life as people perceive me to be (Smiles). I remember discussing with Raju Khan (choreographer) that I've been famous with the mike and the cap so why not make use of it. I wanted to include a dance step which would show the funny side of Himesh Reshammiya.

You always seem more comfortable working with newcomers. Why is that?

I think I am very unconventional. I am still a few films away to reach the conventional setup because I have always been criticized when it comes to acting and Damadamm! will prove it to all.

Your music always caters to the masses. Please comment.

Yes, absolutely and that's the case with Bodyguard and now with the music of Damadamm! songs like 'Madhushala' and 'Umrao Jaan' are all mass hits. I have made 'Main Jahan Rahoon' for the classes and won awards too. 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' got me awards as a singer. I was the first composer-turned-singer to receive a Filmfare award. I have always been a package of class and mass together.

How do you deal with criticism?

Even the biggest stars receive criticism, so I don't have any problems if someone has an opinion about me. But otherwise, hundreds of people have been with me that's why I am successful today. People called me nasal but by the grace of god, I gave fifty hits in one year. Kishore Kumar is one example of singer-turned-actor and has been a legend. Damadamm! will end the whole debate of why did I turn into an actor because I will definitely continue to act.

What are your plans for the future?

Reinvention is very important for a composer and I started my own music company, my first agenda was to have a lot of content. I created five hundred new songs and collaborated with two-fifty new artists. It was very necessary for me to break my own record with Bodyguard and this can be done only with a thorough preparation. I have seen composers fade away and that has always been my fear. I will reinvent myself each year.

I’m working on a six-pack for an action film’

‘I’m working on a six-pack for an action film’

There is something about Himesh Reshammiya. He may not top your favourite actors’ list, but you cannot ignore him. Reshammiya, who made nasal twang a fad with the chartbuster Aashiq Banaya Aapne, will be out this Diwali to woo his fans with his histrionics and, of course, music in Damadamm, an entertainer about a two-timing lover, written by him. He talks to Priyanka Pereira about reinventing himself and competing with Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra.One for attention.

Did the failure of your previous films make you look at comedy, a more popular genre?

I am inspired by Kishore Kumar. He was such a great performer, actor, singer and composer. I want to take his legacy to the next level. As an actor, I started out well. Aap Ka Suroor was a big hit, which gave me the start I needed. With Karzzzz, I shouldn’t have tried remaking the classic. Radio was more for a niche audience. Kajraare was a good film and the music had picked up well, but my fallout with Bhushan Kumar ruined it for me. Now, all the misunderstandings between us have been put to rest.

With Damadamm, are you trying to reinvent the actor in you?

Until now, people have seen me as Himesh Reshammiya in films. But in Damadamm, they will see me as Sameer, a middle-class boy who is trapped in various situations because of a possessive girlfriend.

Where did the inspiration for the songs Umrao Jaan and Madhushaala come from?

Lyrics are as important as the music. After the music of Bodyguard became a success, I had to better it by composing songs which were completely out-of-the-box. With Umrao Jaan and Madhushaala, I wanted the music to be a rage even before the movie releases.

Your film will be competing against Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra.One in theatres.

Not at all. Shah Rukh Khan is the king of Bollywood. His film will do well. But on the occasion of Diwali, I am sure mine will also do well, just like

Akshay Kumar’s Garam Masala and Ajay Devgn’s Golmaal.

How do you define your journey as an actor?

My journey has been full of ups and downs, but nevertheless wonderful. I have been critically acclaimed by as many as 40 critics. Commercial success has eluded me, but when you are a good actor, success will come sooner or later.

What is the secret behind your sustenance as an actor?

My biggest USP has been my music. Also, I have the ability to reinvent myself. I have composed for over 100 films, which most composers wouldn’t do in their lifetime. As an actor, I have looked at different roles. Soon, you will see me with a six-pack as I am set to play an action hero. I am also working in a Hollywood film called A Star Is Killed, where I am the only Indian actor.

You had sworn off composing music for films other than your own. Why did you make the exception for Bodyguard?

I was creatively not ready with more music after Namastey London. I had worked continuously for years and

exhausted all my songs. For one-and-a-half years, I took a break and composed 500 songs and now, I am using all of them in the films I have signed as actor and composer. Right now, I have signed Namastey London 2 and Dangerous Ishk. I am also working on my international album, where I have collaborated with Edward Maya.

I am the reflection of my father: Himesh

The musician credits his father, Vipin Reshammiya, as his inspiration and clears the air about the tiff with music magnate Bhushan Kumar

The man who could make it big only with his music sense, Himesh Reshammiya, says that he has inherited this talent from his father. Vipin Reshammiya was the first person to introduce the synthesiser to the Indian film music. Having worked with several legendary musicians like RD Burman and Laxmikant- Pyarelal, Vipin never got the limelight he deserved. And Himesh is not happy with the fact. He says, " My dad has not received many awards which he deserved. But he did receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award which is indeed a big thing. But now he has taken a backseat as he wants me to be at the top. Actually his name has not been highlighted as much as mine. But I must say that my work is reflection of my father, I have learnt everything from him.

One can say that it is his work but my name." The last release form Himesh Reshammiya was once again a box office dud, 'Kajraare'. The film led to a lot of issues between Himesh and Bhushan Kumar.

" Bhushan released 'Kajraare'in only one theatre. He was also losing money; as giving such release is not good. Eighty percent of my films are from him but this episode drew us apart. But now finally we are back to work together as 'Damadamm'has tied up with T- Series," says Himesh. In the past, Bhushan Kumar made a statement saying he has no objection to Himeshs singing but has objection to his acting. When we ask the composer about it he says, " That was a media quote he gave.

But now things have changed. We are back and the proof is 'Damadamm'." Coming to competition in Bollywood, Himesh says he is not into a rat race with anyone. " I am not competing with anybody but interacting with them. However, you cannot say that I am bonding with everyone on a special level.

It is not that they are my best friends, but then they are not my rivals too. They are my colleagues and very soon you will see them associating with HR Musik Limited," adds Himesh.

With a huge music bank, Himesh has created a collection all by himself. He says, " I have composed 500 songs, signed 250 new artists and completely reinvented myself. I have even got international artist like Edward Maya on my side. Also I have made almost five scripts for my production company." So we question the composer on the huge music bank, when would he share his music with the fans? " I don't record these songs but compose them for my bank. I need leisure and peace to compose music. Last time I had composed 300 songs which lasted for 10 years. I will reinvent those 500 songs because sounds and voices keep changing. But the graph of the melody remains the same. Melody structure of Himesh remains the same. I am growing more as a company so my preference is to get out those 500 songs," concludes Himesh.

We hope the audience will enjoy this huge booty of music from Himesh, after all he has proved his mettle, critics notwithstanding.

Let them pan him, his fans have made their 'Himesbhai'a hit!

Akshay-Himesh: New partners in tinsel town

This news is not yet confirmed (in fact denied indirectly) as of now by Himesh.

Apart from acting together, Akshay Kumar and Himesh Reshammiya team up to produce an action comedy together

Although three films are releasing this Diwali, the promotion of one of them is not as aggressive as it should be.
Â
If Shah Rukh Khan is leaving no stone unturned for his RA.One and Hema Malini is doing her bit for daughter Esha's Tell Me O Khuda, Himesh Reshammiya was preoccupied during last week to promote Damadamm.
The reason being that he was overseeing the shoot for the promo of his next production venture, in association with Akshay Kumar.

It is learnt that the composer-singer-actor and now producer has joined hands with Akshay to produce a comedy of errors, slated to release in the second half of next year.

Apparently, Akki was always the first choice for the heroic character in the storyline. "So much so that Himesh and his team wouldn't have considered another actor until Akshay

said that he won't be able to accommodate this film," revealed our source, adding that the multi-faceted artist had a series of meetings with Khiladi Kumar before he finally agreed to do it.

That's not all. As our source continues, "Akshay also decided to be involved in the production of the film. And Himesh was just as happy to have him as a co-producer also, apart from being a co-star."

If Akshay's playing a heroic character in the film, it seems Himesh is the central character. "While the storyline revolves around Himesh, Akshay is the hero of the film.

And when he comes into the picture, the story takes an altogether different turn," points our source, enthusiastic about the promo the team shot over the weekend.
The shoot took place on Friday and Saturday at Kamalistan Studios in Jogeshwari, under the aegis of south-based action director Peter Heins.

"This particular trailer was picturised on Akshay performing a few stunts, including fisticuffs and cars blowing up. While Akshay is known for his action, the kind of thrills in this film is something you haven't seen him do before," promised our source.

When contacted, Himesh maintained that they were shooting a commercial. "The kind of ad that was being made, Peter was the best person to call the shots," he said, denying making a movie at present.

"If I were making a film, I'd announce it as soon as things are finalised. You think I'd be able to keep production plans under wraps if I had started shooting anything?

There are about 300 people in a movie crew, so it's impossible to keep quiet about production," he said, promising to share his film production plans as soon as everything was finalised.
